Red Doves

In certain parts of ancient Greece, Aphrodite's priestesses were called "Doves." This is notable at Mt. Eryx, in Sicily, where the doves were said to depart the vicinity of Aphrodite's temple at the same time that she herself left. Her retreat from the temple there was marked with a festival called the Anagogia, and her return was celebrated with the Katagogia. When she returned, of course, so did her doves. It is here, at Mt. Eryx, that the term "Red Dove" came to mean a priestess of Aphrodite.

The Red Doves of Aphrodite are a group of women and men who consider themselves practicing priests and priestesses of Aphrodite. They are active in serving her and in serving their communities. The forms of their service take different shape, as we recognize Aphrodite as a complex Goddess with many spheres of influence. Those listed here make themselves available to the public in the specific ways they have listed. Some, as you will note, have taken a guiding influence in the working and development of this Temple of Aphrodite. We thank all of the Red Doves for their service!
